Braided bread

Braided bread, with its elaborate interlocking shape, is a traditional delicacy in many cultures, from Eastern Europe to the Middle East.  Its soft texture and tempting aroma make it a delight for the senses, perfect to accompany meals or enjoy alone.  In addition to its delicious flavor, its braiding symbolizes union and connection, making each bite a shared and comforting experience.

Ingredients:

• 500g wheat flour

• 7g dry yeast (or 25g fresh yeast)

• 250ml of warm milk

• 50g of sugar

• 50g melted butter

• 1 egg

• 1 teaspoon salt

• Optional: beaten egg or milk to glaze the surface before baking

Make sure the dough is well kneaded to obtain a smooth and elastic texture.  Also, don’t skimp on the rest time so that the dough develops optimal flavor and a perfect structure when baking.

Preparation:

1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk and let sit for a few minutes until foamy.

2. Add the sugar, melted butter and egg to the bowl with the yeast.

3. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing well to form a soft dough.  If necessary, add more flour or milk to get the right consistency.

4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rest in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

6. Once the dough has doubled in size, divide it into three equal parts.  Shape each part into a long, thin rope.

7. Place the three ropes of dough side by side and join them at the top.  Begin braiding the ropes, making sure to tighten lightly so that the braid is firm.

8. Once braided, join the ends of the braid and fold them down to form a round loaf.

9. Transfer the braided bread to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover with a clean cloth, and let rest for another 30-45 minutes, or until it rises again in size.

10. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).  Optionally, you can glaze the surface of the bread with beaten egg or milk to obtain a golden color.

11. Bake the braided bread in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

12. Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a rack before cutting and enjoying.

I hope you enjoy your homemade braided bread!  If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
